Man stabbed after threat
A 43-year-old man was stabbed during an attempted robbery while he walked early Saturday on the East Side, according to police.
The victim was stabbed in the lower left abdomen, according to officer Gary Wyberg's report. He also suffered slashes across his left hand.
The incident happened about 1 a.m. between the White Horse Inn and 7-Eleven convenience store on Fourth Street, Wyberg said.
The victim said he was confronted by two suspects, a Hispanic man and a black man, who demanded his money and threatened to kill him, Wyberg said. The black man brandished a knife after the victim refused, then reportedly stabbed him.
Both suspects are described as being about 6 feet tall with medium builds and about 25 years old.
The Hispanic man was wearing a brown and red shirt with black pants. The black suspect was wearing a white shirt and black pants.
The victim's medical condition was not available late Saturday.

Teens to stand trial in death

Two teens with suspected gang ties have been ordered to stand trial for the shooting death of a woman in August.
District Judge Dennis Maes ruled Monday that probable cause exists for Michael Highelk, 18, and Phillip Castro, 17, to stand trial on charges of first-degree murder for the death of 21-year-old Jamie Ruybal.
Highelk is accused of driving a car carrying Castro, when Castro allegedly fired a shot from a 9 mm handgun that struck Ruybal as she stood in the driveway of a house in the 2500 block of Fifth Avenue early on the morning of Aug. 19. Both defendants have been charged as adults.
Highelk is in jail in lieu of $750,000 bail. Castro, who faces an additional charge of possession of a weapon by a previous offender, is in jail with bail set at $1 million.
Highelk reportedly told police rival gang members outside of the house where the shooting took place shouted at him and Castro, flashed gang signs at them and pounded on Highelk's car as they drove past, prompting Castro to shoot.
Witnesses told police the car passed the home once, then made a U-turn and returned before the fatal shot was fired.

"Ex-teacher cuts deal on sex charges

CANON CITY - A former sixth-grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School will face two years to life in prison after she pleaded guilty Monday to two child sexual assault charges which involved her former students.
Jennie Overstreet, 33, pleaded guilty to two felony counts of sexual assault on a child and 17 other charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement.
Police had evidence that six juvenile male victims, all former sixth-grade students who were in her class, ranging in age from 12 to 14, were allowed to drink alcohol and view pornography at Overstreet's home, plus many smoked marijuana with her and two admitted to taking a prescription drug with her.
One boy, age 13, said he had sexual intercourse with Overstreet on three occasions. Another boy, age 13, said she performed oral sex on him.
Many of the boys also told police Overstreet would buy them gifts or give them cash.
Overstreet has been jailed since her May 26 arrest. She will return to court Nov. 22 for sentencing.
'She can be held in prison forever,' said District Attorney Molly Chilson. 'We are getting what we want.'
Chilson said since the sex offender legislation was enacted in 1998, only two offenders have been granted parole.
She remains jailed in lieu of $75,000 bail at the Pueblo County jail."

Masked men invade home in Bessemer

Masked men Friday night invaded and assaulted a man in his Bessemer home and stole $3,500 in cash, according to police.
The incident occurred at 9:34 p.m. in the 1600 block of Spruce Street, according to Pueblo police officer Gregory Paul Drake's report.
Victim Terry Garner, 38, suffered cuts and bruises, Drake said.
Garner said he heard a knock at his front door at 9:10 p.m. He opened the door and saw a 27-year-old woman acquaintance standing with at least five masked men.
The men rushed into the house and knocked Garner to the ground and beat him with their fists and feet, Drake said.
Suspects also rummaged through kitchen cabinets and found $3,500 in $100 bills Garner had stashed. Garner said the woman standing outside was the only person who knew where the money was, Drake said.
The suspects were described being unarmed black men wearing bandanas across their faces. Police recovered one bandana in the house, Drake said.
Police continue to investigate.

A Pueblo man who admitted he had a consensual sexual relationship with his adult son was sentenced Friday to a term of two years to life in prison.
Richard “Bill” Wurster, 55, pleaded guilty to a single felony count of incest. Sixteen other felony counts were dismissed as part of his plea agreement. Wurster was granted credit for more than 10 months he spent in county jail before his sentencing, and could be eligible for parole in about a year.
Under Colorado's sex-offender sentencing statute, Wurster will remain in prison indefinitely until the Colorado Department of Corrections determines he is not a threat to society.

Everything was golden until the police arrived.
That's when a Pueblo man was cited for urinating in public and huffing gold spray paint.
According to a report by Pueblo police Cpl. Gary Vannelli, officers responded to reports of a man urinating outside of the Bramble Tree Inn, 115 E. Eighth St., at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday.
Police found the suspect urinating off of a second-floor balcony. As officers climbed the stairs to contact him, they could hear the man talking to himself.
At the top of the stairs, police found the suspect sitting down with three cans of spray paint near his legs and lamenting that he had wet his jacket. His face and hands were covered in gold paint.
A fourth can of gold spray paint was collected by police when they transported the suspect to a detox center.

CSU-Pueblo students rally against sex crimes, violence

Pueblo community members are invited to join with Colorado State University-Pueblo students and staff in "taking back the night."

The student counseling center at CSU-Pueblo will host a "Take Back the Night March and Rally" from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Fountain Plaza in an effort to raise awareness of sexual assault and other violent acts.

In case of inclement weather, the rally will be moved to the ballroom of the Occhiato Student Center.

Event organizers Fred Stultz and Barbara Hadley said they hope the rally will help to emphasize that sexual violence or violence of any kind will not be tolerated at CSU-Pueblo or in the community.

"Take Back the Night" is an international event that began in 1976 in Europe in an effort to bring an awareness of violence against women, children and families.

The first such rally took place in the United States in 1978.

CANON CITY - Are the state prisons become a breeding ground for new charges?
Inmates serving time in state prisons seem to public defenders to be increasingly facing new charges as the days of in-house punishment are falling by the wayside. On the other side of the coin, prosecutors are filing charges against inmates in an effort to keep the peace behind bars.
The Colorado Department of Corrections does not track numbers of new cases filed against its inmates.
"Very few cases are actually taken downtown," said Brent Parker, DOC spokesman. "Obviously assaults, murders, escapes or inmates with a lot of drugs are going to be facing new charges."

"Two injured in gang shooting, police say"

Two men were injured late Thursday in a shooting at a South Side park that police are calling gang-related.
Jeremy Vidana, 19, and David Padilla, 18, were treated at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center for their injuries.
Vidana was shot in the buttocks. The bullet exited frontally. His condition was critical on Friday, according to Pueblo police Sgt. Kenny Rider. Padilla was shot in the abdomen. His condition was not immediately available, but police believed Vidana's injury to be more serious than Padilla's.
Padilla told police he is affiliated with the Kelly Park Crips gang, Rider said.
Officers responded to reports of shots fired at Far South Park, 600 Maryland Avenue, at 11:20 p.m., according to a report by Pueblo police Cpl. Tisha Diante.
Near the basketball court and playground area of the park, police found blood spots and smears on the concrete slab. More blood evidence was found on the sidewalk and street around the corner of Maryland and Routt avenues.
Witnesses reported hearing a series of gunshots, followed by a pause and one more shot. They said up to six men were in the park at the time of the shooting. Two cars were seen in the area: a dark-colored vehicle, possibly a Ford Thunderbird, and a white Dodge Intrepid.
At 12:25 a.m., the Colorado State Patrol stopped an Intrepid matching the description of the car seen around the time of the shooting. Its occupants were questioned and released.
Rider said no one has been arrested for the crime.

Pueblo police detectives on Wednesday raided a house on West 12th Street and arrested two suspects in connection with the ongoing rash of copper thefts.
Raymond Word, 43, and Bradley Harman, 19, were booked into Pueblo County jail on burglary warrants. They were arrested at Word's house, 1032 W. 12th St., where detectives served a search warrant and recovered at least eight rolls of copper wire that had been reported stolen this weekend from Aquila.

The man said he'd been invited to drive in the yard by the home's resident. He said he was told the yard would be a good way to get around a traffic checkpoint.

The resident told police a different story. He said he was pulling weeds in his front yard when he heard a loud crashing noise. He looked in the back yard and saw the white pickup truck driving around in his back yard, having driven through the fence from Pueblo Boulevard.

A Sav-A-Lot employee told police that sometime Friday evening someone vandalized his pickup truck and stole 500 compact discs that were inside the vehicle.
The employee told police officer Jonathan Adams that the truck's steering column and ignition switch of his 1987 Chevy half ton truck were damaged.
The estimated loss and damages is $7,505.

Jail escapee sentenced to 22 years in prison

An inmate who made a harrowing escape from county jail in March and eluded capture for three days was sentenced on Friday to 22 years in prison for absconding from the jail and the crime spree that originally placed him there.
Manuel Luna, 25, pleaded guilty to escape and robbery. Six years of his prison term was imposed for the escape, and District Jude Scott Epstein imposed 16 years to be served consecutively for the robbery.

Police investigate report of shots fired in Belmont

Police are investigating a Monday shooting that occurred in the 0-30 block of Scotland Road in Belmont.
One witness told officer Richard Jones he heard several gunshots fired in the street early Monday. The report did not say what time the shooting occurred. Later in the morning, the 51-year-old witness called police again after finding two bullet casings in the street.
One of the casings recovered was from a .380-caliber handgun, the report said. A woman who lives in the area reported bullet holes in three walls of her house. Damage was estimated at $500.

Shots reported on West SidePolice are investigating a shooting that happened late Sunday at an apartment complex on the West Side.No one was injured in the incident, but $800 worth of windows were damaged, according to Pueblo police officer Jeremy Mathews' report.The shooting occurred at 11:20 p.m. at apartments in the 1900 block of West 11th Street.According to Mathews, witnesses saw two Hispanic males, each about 5-foot-6 and one wearing a flannel shirt, standing in the street near a black truck. A third suspect, a Hispanic male about the same height, was in the back of a red truck also parked in the street.Just before the shooting, one suspect standing by the black truck ran north through the apartments. The suspect who had been in the red truck then got in the black truck and drove away, almost hitting the second suspect who was standing by the black truck, Mathews said."

Both men denied any knowledge of the incident. The 19-year-old said his black truck had been stolen earlier in the night and his friend, who was with him at the time, told him it was parked in the street at Hooper Avenue, so they went to recover it.
The 19-year-old told Mathews he had not reported his truck stolen to police because he was sure whoever took his truck would return it later.
The two were released. Police continue to investigate.

Olonia said he'd been told that a heavy-set Hispanic man in a green sport utility vehicle was dealing drugs in the parking lot of the Northern Avenue bar. Olonia and another officer saw a parked green Ford Explorer with a heavy-set driver, a passenger and third man leaning in the window, whom they thought may be buying drugs. After getting permission from the driver to search him, Olonia found 20 baggies of cocaine and $512 in cash. The driver, Andrew Claudio Garcia, 23, who gave police a home address in the 1600 block of Lake Avenue, was arrested on suspicion of possession of drugs and possession of drugs with intent to sell them. He remained in jail on Saturday without chance for bail pending a court hearing."

Fourth St., was able to help catch the driver that hit him. Kelly Patrick told police officer Arron Chasteen that a white car backed into him as he stood in the parking lot at about 2 a.m. Saturday. He described the driver as a small woman nicknamed Pumpkin. Patrick had a cut finger and said his leg hurt from the accident.While Patrick was answering questions, he saw the suspect's white car on Fourth Street and pointed it out to the officer. The officer talked to the driver, Cecelia Rodgers, 25, who said she'd hit a car in the parking lot and then exchanged information with the owner. The officer suspected Rodgers was drunken driving and noticed blood drops on the hood of her car. The officer arrested Rodgers, who said she lived in the 1500 block of east Second Street, on suspicion of drunken driving, driving with no insurance and leaving the scene of an accident involving an injury. She remained in Pueblo County Jail on Saturday without chance for bail pending a court hearing."

Suspect in foiled theft escapes by stealing van
A man suspected of stealing clothes at a local department store made his getaway by stealing something else - someone's van.
Pueblo County Sheriff's Deputy A.J. Colletti told police that he was working as a security guard Friday at the Dillard's in the Pueblo Mall when he saw a man steal some clothes.
The deputy said he watched from a remote video camera as the suspect selected some clothes in the store, put them in a plastic bag from behind an unused register and headed to the changing room.
When Colletti reached the store's main floor, he met the man and identified himself as a sheriff's deputy. The man dropped the bag of clothes and ran out a door.
Colletti told police officer Ryan Waring that he chased the man and hitched a ride from a passing motorist to follow the running thief to the Sleep Inn near Interstate 25.
Colletti said he tackled the suspect, but he got away as Colletti called 911 for help. Colletti pursued him, lost him for a time and then saw him drive away in a gray van. The owner of the Chevy Astro Van told police he was working at the Luv Homes lot on north Elizabeth Street when the suspect took the vehicle, which had the keys inside.
The suspect wasn't seen again and the van hasn't been found.
The van owner’s loss was estimated to be $900.

Gary Vannelli. When the others told him to jump into the river, Dowd did it.
